Charity Fun Day 2013

Posted on: August 28th, 2013 by Nathan Reid

On Sunday 14th July 2013, Tapton School was full to the brim with visitors on site for our Active8 Charity Fun Day 2013.  As always, the event was in aid of two fantastic causes close to all our hearts here at Active8, Weston Park Cancer Charity and The Barnsley Hospice.  As a warm-up for the day, we hosted our first ever stand-alone car boot sale at King Edwards VII Lower School on Sunday 7th July 2013.  Special thanks go out to all those who attended that day.

One thing that was different from previous years is that the sun was shining all day and not only could people join in all the fun activities on offer but they could top up their tans at the same time.

A large focal point of the big day was our Charity Junior Football Gala, which was an enormous success and made great for great viewing throughout the day.  Teams turned up from all over the city – from Crosspool to Maltby and Ecclesfield to Stocksbridge, the variation in teams and age groups was impressive.  Separate sections ran for the Under 8’s, 9’s, 10’s and 11’s age groups and none of the tournament disappointed.  Special mentions go to our winners and runner-up who were as follows:

Under 8’s – Winners:  Nether Green JFC   Runners-up:  Norton Lees

Under 9’s – Winners:  Greenhill JFC

Under 10’s – Winners:  Crosspoool Juniors   Runners-up:  SWFC Young Owls

Under 11’s – Winners:  SWFC Young Owls  Runners-up:  Woodhouse JFC

As well as the football, we had plenty of other activities going on throughout the day.  There were bouncy castles, a parrot show, fairground rides, face painting, a car boot sale, various craft stalls, charity basketball and tennis, our ever-present Caribbean food on offer and, of course, Big Al himself leading the microphone and getting everyone involved (including numerous members of Active8 staff taking part in a Macarena dance-off!?).

A HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who was involved in making the day such a success including stall holders, footballers, parents, team managers and anyone else who turned up to support the amazing causes.  The event would have struggled to take place without you all and would have inevitably raised significantly less funds. A mention to all the businesses and colleagues who made donations in the form of raffle prizes to the day as well.

Finally we would like to mention our hard-working staff who put in a massive effort not only on the day but in the build up to this event.

We hope to continue the fundraising for the rest of the year and beyond.  It would be great if you could join us and we see you all again in the near future.

The total raised from the day was a healthy £915.00 and this will be donated to our charities shortly.

Enjoy and take care.

Charity Fun Day & Car Boot Sale – 2013

Posted on: June 24th, 2013 by Nathan Reid

Active8 Sheffield will be hosting their sixth annual charity fun day on Sunday 14th July 2013 with the normal car boot sale taking place the week before on Sunday 7th July 2013 due to the size of the main event. The Weston Park Hospital and Barnsley Hospice cancer charities will again benefit from the success of both days. The fun day takes place 10:00 am – 3:00 pm and is at both King Edwards and Tapton Community Sports Centre with the car boot taking place at Tapton from 8:00 am onwards.

It will be a fun event for all and will raise further awareness of the work that is done by these wonderful charities. The event has been a massive success over the years and has been supported from the outset by many local businesses who dedicate there time to make this event the success that it is.

Activities taking place throughout the day will include 4 small-sided children’s football tournament on the 3G astro turfs and grass pitches. The event will again be supported by many organizations that have worked with us since the day begun in 2007 and these include Fun 2 Bounce, Big Als Funhouse Entertainment, Party Animals, Bishops Coffee House and Bistro, Active Stars, Chris’s Ices plus several other Sheffield based organisations.

Features include fairground rides, inflatable slides, a parrot show, an animal farm, bouncy castle’s, a penalty shoot-out with Caribbean Food catering for your taste buds.

This is an event that you don’t want to miss, we raised £1092.00 last year and in total since the start of the event we have donated over £8000 to the charities since the event began in 2007, we have spread the event over two days this year to ensure greater success for everyone involved.

All money raised from the events whether this is through pitch fees for the car boots or entry fees to the tournaments are donated directly to the charities, with the additional on-site activities donating a fee from there takings for the day.

Please come and show your support entry to the event is free, and the experience from the day will make a difference to someone’s future. Whether this is through donations or you have a conversation with one of the on-site Weston Park or Barnsley Hospice representatives this could help to change the lives of the people we all love.

We look forward to seeing you on the day.

Active8 Sprinkled with Stardust

Posted on: February 26th, 2013 by Nathan Reid

[singlepic id=72 w=320 h=240 float=center]

Stardust were crowned winners of Active8 Sheffield’s first ever netball tournament on Sunday 24th February 2013. The full day event took place at our very own Tapton and King Edwards Community Sports Centres and was a great day for all involved.

The day kicked off with the 10 teams being split into two pools and playing a round robin to pit themselves against all the other teams in their pools. The president for the day was set in this stage as both finalists, Stardust and Bobcats, went unbeaten picking up four wins (and 20 points) in the process. But don’t be fooled as both pools went down to the wire and 3 teams were looking like they would finish on 16 points in pool 2 with only 1 game to play. However, Bobcats quality finally prevailed to see them pick up the win and top the pool.

The semi-finals saw Bobcats head up against runners up of pool 2, Ballsaints, and pool 1 winners Stardust met Irwin Michellettes at the same stage. After a brilliant fight from Ballsaints, Bobcats again powered on to reach the final. Stardust again made light work of their semi-final and also made it to the main stage.

So, with 2 unbeaten sides coming together in the final, it was inevitable that one team were going to leave disappointed for the first time of the day. The game started and went on just as you would imagine with Stardust only leading by one point at half-time. The second half was just as energetic and end-to-end and in true final fashion the score at full-time was 18-18. This meant that in order to find a winner between these two it was going to take extra-time and in the end Stardust’s fitness appeared to be the deciding factor and the went on to win the tournament 25-21.

A massive well done and thank you to everyone that took part and made the event such a fun filled, yet highly competitive day.

A final mention must go out to our 4 umpires on the day. The event wouldn’t have been possible without them.

Active8 New Year 6-a-side Football Tournament

Posted on: January 12th, 2012 by Nathan Reid

On Monday 9th January 2012 Active Sheffield hosted their second 6-a-side football tournament in as many months at Tapton Community Sports Centre. Again the event ran as smooth as expected and was an enjoyable evening for all who took part.

Due to last minute drop-outs only four teams managed to make the tournament but this took nothing away from the passion and excitement that came along with the event. After a somewhat slow start from both teams, Richard Brand’s Winn Gardens VI and Robert Dale’s Royal Standard FC made their way into the final and competed in a classic showdown. Do not let the 0-0 finishing scoreline fool you as this match possibly contained more chances than all of the preceding games combined. These included numerous saves from both goalkeepers, not to mention an open goal opportunity fluffed.
With the game ending in deadlock, a penalty shoot-out took place and was eventually clinched by Winn Gardens VI in sudden death as, after a Royal Standard miss, Nathan Reid slammed the final spot-kick into the top corner to make it 4-3 and claim the title.

Phillip Jarvest’s St Thomas Crookes FC finished in a close 3rd place after they deservedly defeated Jonathan Roper’s Side in a 3rd and 4th place play-off 6-2. The well organised outfit rushed into an early lead and then made it impossible for their opponents to get back into the game.

We would like to take the time to say well done and thank you to everyone who took part and look forward to seeing you in future events!
