Sunday 8th July 2012 saw Active8 Sheffield host their 5th annual Charity Fun Day at King Edwards and Tapton. One show piece of the day was our summer football tournament final between our top two teams Greenhill White Hart and Jack-in-a-box FC.
The game got underway at 12pm and surprisingly (after the dismal days previous) the sun was shining as special guest referee Uriah Rennie got the game underway. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield was present at kick off to have photos with both teams and even managed to get himself a kick around. As for the game, it started with a bang! Jack-in-a-box FC raced out of the blocks and were 2-1 ahead with just 10 minutes on the clock – this was shaping up to be the classic that we had hoped for. This set the scene for the rest of the game as Greenhill equalised through Karl Colley and then took the lead just before half time. However, Jack-in-a-box are not a team that lies down and nicked one themselves just before the break to take the teams in level at 3-3.
Greenhill came out quickest after the break and went ahead with Nicky Owen’s 2nd goal of the game. The teams continued to battle in out until Owen completed his hat-trick and gave Greenhill some breathing space at 5-3. Jack-in-a-box refused to give up and were a credit to themselves as they pushed until the end. But it was Greenhill captain Andy Taylor who had the last laugh and made it 6-3 in the last minute to put the game, and in turn the tournament, out of reach!
Andy then took centre stage himself as he collected the trophy for Greenhill who in the end were deserving winners. Mr Taylor has already laid the gauntlet and vows that they will defend their title at the next event!
A massive thank you to all that took part, we have had a great time organising the event and hope this has shown for the guys taking part. We hope that you will join us for upcoming events and we will see you in the not to distant future!
